Rappers have a long history of holding label positions. Jeezy became Vice President of A&R at Atlantic Records back in 2012, for example, and just think of all the ones who own labels today.
Kanye West is one of those fortunate enough to run his own entity and this morning it was announced that Pusha T — one of the artists signed to his G.O.O.D. Music label — will become its next president.
Billboard broke the story in an interview with the Virginia Beach rapper. He says it all started with a phone call from West after touching down from a flight.
“Ye had called me and he was like, ‘Tell me something. What do you think about being the president of G.O.O.D. Music?’ And I was like, ‘Well, what are the things that you’re looking for?’” he explained when asked how discussions began. “He was basically just like, to manicure the label, make it profitable and be very business-oriented about it going forward in a manicured type of way.”
King Push also explained why he believes Kanye picked him to run his label. Apparently, he has brought artists around Ye that displayed his knack for recognizing talent and correctly called the fall of artists destined for a short shelf life.
“I think he respects that a lot and not to mention, ever since I’ve been on G.O.O.D. Music, there’s been a host of artists that I’ve brought to the table, tried to sign, brought to his attention in trying to sign, whether something was super hot or I called it it’s not going to stand the test of time, it’s wack,” he said. “I been pretty right in a few regards. Those are the things he keys on as far as I go and just as far as being a part of the culture.”
Also during the interview Pusha T responds to the possibility of a Cruel Summer 2 album and says his newest gig won’t affect the timelines or quality of his own musical output.
G.O.O.D. Music was founded in 2004 by Kanye West and has since seen its fair share of success. Ten albums released from the label have attained gold status or above and the label houses the likes of Big Sean, John Legend and Q-Tip among others.
With boss man Ye running for POTUS in 2020 no wonder he’s looking for someone to takeover! After all, he can’t run the country and a label at the same time! What’s your 2 cents??!
